Piano Coaching and Hand Doubling for Film and Television

A character does not become a pianist simply because there is a piano in the scene.

The way an actor approaches the instrument, sits, moves and places their hands all contribute to whether the performance feels convincing. Viewers may not know precisely what is wrong, but piano players usually notice. We are a rather observant group.

As a classically trained pianist and experienced music educator, I provide piano coaching, musical guidance and hand doubling for film and television productions.

My screen work includes coaching actor Jessica Barden and serving as the piano hand double for her character, Jane, in the Netflix limited series Pieces of Her.

Pieces of Her

Jane is presented as a highly accomplished young pianist in Pieces of Her, making the musical detail an important part of how the audience understands her character.

I worked with Jessica Barden as her piano coach and performed as Jane’s piano hand double for scenes appearing in Episode 5.

The role brought together two areas of my experience: performing the music accurately and understanding how another person needs to move for the playing to look natural on screen.

Making Piano Playing Look Convincing

Piano performance involves more than moving the correct fingers at approximately the correct time.

Posture, hand position, movement between notes and the physical relationship between the pianist and the instrument all contribute to a believable result. The demands also change according to the character.

An experienced concert pianist should not approach the keyboard like a beginner. A nervous student will move differently from someone who has performed for years. Even when the actor’s hands are not shown closely, their preparation and physical confidence affect the scene.

Coaching can help an actor understand:

  • how a pianist sits and prepares to play;
  • how the hands and arms move at the instrument;
  • where attention naturally falls during a performance;
  • how to make repeated actions consistent across takes;
  • how the character’s musical experience might influence their movement;
  • which details will help the performance appear credible.

The aim is not necessarily to teach someone to become a pianist within the production schedule.

It is to identify what the scene requires and help the actor perform those details with confidence and consistency.

Piano Hand Doubling

Some scenes require a pianist to perform the music for close-up or technically demanding shots.

As a piano hand double, I can work with the production requirements while maintaining the physical detail of genuine playing. This may involve matching the character’s positioning, costume and movement, repeating passages across takes, and working within the practical demands of filming.

Continuity matters. So does being able to reproduce the same musical gesture after the camera, lighting or angle has changed for the fifth time.

Musical Experience for the Screen

I trained in piano performance at the Conservatorium of Music in Košice, Slovakia, before completing postgraduate studies in musicology and pedagogy at Comenius University in Bratislava.

I have worked as a pianist and music educator for decades, teaching students from beginners through to advanced performers. This gives me both the technical knowledge to understand what the music requires and the teaching experience to explain it clearly to someone who may be encountering the instrument for the first time.

Depending on the production, I may be able to assist with:

  • piano coaching for actors;
  • piano hand doubling;
  • guidance on realistic movement and musical behaviour;
  • preparation for a particular scene or piece;
  • reviewing piano-related details for credibility;
  • practical musical consultation during rehearsal or filming.

Let’s Talk About the Scene

If your production involves a character playing piano, tell me what the scene needs to communicate, the actor’s current experience and the available preparation time.

I can then advise whether piano coaching, hand doubling or another form of musical support would be most useful.
