Musical Soirées for Adult Piano Students

A piece changes when someone else is listening.

At home, you can stop, begin again or negotiate with the difficult bar for as long as necessary. In front of an audience, the music continues. Learning how to stay with it is part of becoming a musician.

For many adults, performing does not come naturally. You may feel comfortable playing alone, only to discover that your hands have developed entirely different plans as soon as another person enters the room.

This is why I make performance part of the learning journey.

My musical soirées give adult piano students genuine opportunities to share what they have learned in an environment that is warm, encouraging, and relaxed.

Why Performance Is Part of Learning

Piano lessons involve more than developing technique or mastering the next piece.

Performance gives your learning a practical purpose. It encourages you to prepare a piece as a whole, communicate its character and continue playing when something does not go exactly as intended.

It also helps you become more comfortable with being heard.

You do not need ambitions for the concert stage to benefit. Performing for a small, supportive audience can build confidence, reveal what still needs attention and let you experience the satisfaction of sharing music with other people.

The aim is not perfection. It is to become more secure, more expressive and better able to stay with the music when nerves appear.

Evenings Built Around Music

Some soirées are hosted in my students’ homes, while more intimate gatherings take place in my Bondi Junction studio.

Each evening centres on a beloved composer, such as Beethoven or Chopin. Students perform pieces they have been learning, with some musical history and context woven through the program.

There is enough history to help us listen with greater understanding, but no examination afterwards.

The atmosphere is relaxed, although the preparation is real. Students have something meaningful to work towards, while guests can enjoy the music and learn more about the person who composed it.

A Gentle Rehearsal Before the Real Thing

Smaller soirées are sometimes dedicated to students preparing for an AMEB examination or audition.

These gatherings provide a gentle dress rehearsal before the formal event.

Students can practise entering the room, settling at the piano, performing a complete program and continuing after a hesitation. We can then identify anything that deserves attention while there is still time to work on it.

An examination room should not be the first place you discover what happens when other people are listening.

Sing, Laugh, Play

At the end of the year, we celebrate with Sing, Laugh, Play.

This evening extends the invitation beyond the piano. Every guest is welcome to share their creativity, whether through piano, voice, poetry or something entirely their own.

It is not about presenting a perfectly polished performance. It is an opportunity to contribute, encourage one another and enjoy what happens when different forms of creativity meet in the same room.

The title gives a reasonably accurate description of the evening.

Music Creates Community

These evenings are not only for my students.

Families, friends and fellow music lovers are invited to listen, encourage and celebrate with us. Someone may arrive to support one performer and leave having connected with a roomful of people who share a love of music.

Over time, the soirées have grown into a community I am deeply proud of.

I see students become more confident, guests become part of the occasion and the enjoyment of music spread through the room. That warmth and contagious joy make the evenings rewarding for everyone, including me.
