Meet My AI Music Teaching Assistant

Musical questions do not always appear during a piano lesson.

They may arrive halfway through your practice, when you are trying to understand the key of a piece, work out why a rhythm feels uncertain or remember what you were meant to do with that particular scale.

I created my AI piano assistant to help adult learners with the questions that arise between lessons.

It has been trained on my teaching methods and the complete curriculum of Do Re Mi To You. You can ask about music theory, practice and examination preparation by text or voice, at any time.

If you choose to hear the answer, the assistant responds in a synthesised version of my voice.

Making Do Re Mi To You Interactive

I wrote Do Re Mi To You as a practical guide to the musical and human sides of learning an instrument.

It covers technique, theory, aural skills, sight-reading, practice, repertoire, performance and music examinations. The AI assistant gives you a way to ask about that material when a particular question becomes relevant.

You can use it for questions about:

• music notation, rhythm and theory;

• keys, key signatures, scales and chords;

• musical terms and instructions;

• concepts explored in Do Re Mi To You;

• how to approach your practice;

• examination preparation;

• a piece or passage that is not becoming more secure.

For example, my student Thomas used the assistant when he wanted to identify the key of the piece he was learning.

Instead of searching through the book for one topic, you can ask the question directly and receive an explanation based on the material and my teaching approach.

How the AI Assistant Works

You can type your question or speak to the assistant. Its answer can be provided in text or through a synthesised version of my voice.

The voice is created using AI. It is not a live conversation with me, and I am not personally listening or responding at the other end.

The assistant does not currently accept documents, photographs or other file uploads. If you have a question about a piece, you will need to describe the relevant musical information through text or voice.

Include the piece, passage or concept you are working on and explain where you have become uncertain. The assistant has been trained on my methods, but not on mind-reading.

It is available around the clock, including at 9.47 pm when I am unlikely to answer the phone with enthusiasm.

See the AI Assistant in Use

My student Isobel combines the AI assistant with Do Re Mi To You while learning piano.

Her demonstration shows a simple learning process: she encounters a question, asks the assistant for guidance and then applies the answer to her music.

Support, Not a Substitute for Teaching

The AI assistant can explain an idea, provide context or help you decide what to investigate next.

A piano teacher can do something different. A teacher can listen to your playing, observe how you move, identify what is causing a difficulty and adapt the lesson to the person at the piano.

The assistant supports learning between lessons, but it does not replace that individual attention.

Like any AI tool, it may occasionally misunderstand a question or give an imperfect answer. If something seems unclear or does not fit the music in front of you, check it with your teacher.
